As usual a thought provoking blog post, and one you clearly needed to get off your chest! As a medical ethicist myself, who has a background mainly of philosophy but also of being primary caregiver with my first wife who had cystic fibrosis, I have to agree with most of your comments, there is a tendency both to over generalise in the disability community, and a tendency to be overly dismissive in the philosophical community. I guess the best thing to do is to try and listen in between the rhetoric and present, as you have above, a balanced view.

Cheers

Also, thank you for acknowledging that anger is often justified, even as you explain why this sometimes engenders the opposite response than that hoped for in some listeners/readers.

Rob (Schuyler's Monster), by the way, is often one of the very best at explaining exactly why anger is exactly the right response to a situation.

Thanks for a refreshingly honest, and thoughtful, examination of your biases, and your analysis of your own reaction to some of the more heated activist rhetoric.

The thing I found really interesting about the Misty Cargill case was that, as it was reported on NPR, Steve Reiss came across as alarmist, as if he had never even considered any other explanation other than straight out discrimination.

In the longer article from Exceptional Parent (I linked to a free version in my post), he comes across as much more levelheaded, considering some of the other difficulties that come into play when making decisions about adding to the transplant list.

It makes me wonder about the types of expectations the mainstream media holds for activists. Do they need to be angry sounding, and somewhat intractably radical in order to be quote-worthy activists?

Having been interviewed by a local news reporter here in town about my daughter's wait for a 3rd transplant, I know that I was a terrible interviewee. I couldn't give any straightforward, unqualified sound bites suitable for reporting.

Anyway, interesting reading. And I won't hold it against you that you called my own evenhandedness "surprising."
